toss em in the washing machine and put some soap then putting it on wash.
That is what we always did anyway.
+1, and instead of putting them in the dryer, sit them in front of the refridgerator (on the floor where the warm air comes out). This slow dry helps keep them from losing so much form.

put em upside down on the top shelf of the dish washer...
or do as mentioned above... either way has worked for me... my dryer came with a shoe drying insert so they dont tumble around and make alot of noise or throw the tumbler off kilter...

put them in a pillowcase first though; it'll keep the inside of your machines safe, keep the laces from getting tangled in stuff, and it'll keep the rest of your laundry safe too. i always wash and dry my sneakers in pillowcases and have never had any mishaps.

i honestly dont get this philosophy... do you tie the pillow case??? if you do is it tied tight??? are the shoes placed next to each other, on top on one another or one in front of the other... when the washer hits spin what is the difference???

if I don't have a european sham handy (the kind of pillowcase that has a button or zipper closure), i tie it closed with a ponytail holder, as close to the end of the pillowcase as possible, to allow the shoes to move around in the case enough so they get a good scrubbing.
i was told to do this when i was little, and have done it every time i have washed my shoes since; every time but one. and that one time, i had permanent rubber shoe prints on every bloody thing that was in that washing machine. the entire load was ruined and my shoes had stained streaks on them in a funny color from rubbing against something on the inside of the machine. huge disaster. pillow-case it

perhaps it has just made more sense to me to just wash them alone...

i pillowcase them when i wash them alone too! keeps them from being abraded by the inside of the washing machine and dryer!
...it also keeps the noise-factor down big-time.
