i have a 125DT with a 55g sump = 180g system.
i also have a 20L-FT with a 10g sump = 30g system.
on the 125 i do a 15g water change bi-weekly, and on the 20L i do a 5g water change bi-weekly......
so this being said. how many gallons should i be changing out when i do a water change. also, keep in mind, it has to be bi-weekly cause the drive is far. so i do bi-weekly changes...

All on preference of course but I do weekly 10% water changes. Therefore if you were to drink my kool aid you would do a 25 gallon water change every two weeks on your 125.

so if im gettin this right its 10% of the DT not the total system....?(meaning adding the volume of the sump)

You should change about 10-15% weekly of total water volume.. or 25-30% biweekly. Waterchanges are importatant for a couple reasons... it replenishes your trace elements and removes phosphates from the column.

i know the benefits but didnt know the ratio,,,so it should be total volume not just the DT....on my 125DT thats 36gallons biweekly. isnt that alot of new water every two weeks....see this is why i asked cause im getting different responses...and i still dont know

now if i was to go with your ratio fattony than i would be changing out 45-54 gallons biweekly based on a 25-30% water change. that has to be to much

I have roughly 150 gallons of water volume in my 3 systems. I do approx. 40-50 gallons every 2 weeks. In the end, it really isn't too much.

i have less water, and if your doin 45 gallons. then i would say 25-30 gallons on my tank should be good....
maybe even 30-35 gallons, cant hurt right

for me, I have a 45 gallon sump on my 75 (which has a water volume of around 30-35 gallons when the tank is running) I change 30 gallons every other week from the sump. Basically, i wouldn't change any water out of the display, just what you can in the sump. If that comes out to be 15-20% of your tank volume then call it good...
I leave all the powerheads going in the tank when I do a WC and just shut off the return from the sump.. i also turn off the calcium reactor and the skimmer. pump out 30 gallons and add 30 gallons of fresh back intot he sump. turn the return and CR and skimmer back on and call it good
