Is it OK, and how long can salt water be stored in a plastic bottle and still be suitable to be used for water changes?

Yes I mix mine 24 to 48 hours in advance but they want to know how long they can keep it. I was woundering why they would want to keep it for along time.

I didn't think that was to bad of a question. I wanted to know the same thing. It’s because the RO takes a long time to make water and ties up the kitchen sink. So if I let it run for 48 hours I would have water to do 2 weeks of water change. But I think I will just make up the fresh water and store it. Then make the saltwater as needed. I plain on putting power heads in the can to help keep the water fresh.

I keep the water stored in 5 gal jugs and gal jugs for weeks at a time just don't have the salt in it.

Well, my tank is for local marine life, and the water is from the local ocean. The cleanest water source I know of around here is a 30 minute drive to the south at the Scripps Pier (La Jolla). I can only make it down there 2 or 3 times a week before dark due to work so I think it would be wise to always have at least 10 gallons of useable water on hand ready to go in case of a spike, problem, spill, etc. There will already be salt in it, phytoplankon and who knows what else sucked up through the pump at the pier.

I think I would save some for 3-4 weeks and test it befor using it. You might want to keep a power head in it stiring up the water.

How long and how to store salt water is a mixed bag of opinions and it really depends on what forum yur listening to. One forum they all swear it needs no aeratin or powerheads if its in a closed container and stored in a dark cool place under 80 deg.
Another says one or two weeks at most as long as its aerated.
One LFS here says no more than 48 hours with aeration.....Then again they make and sell it so its to their advantage if its tossed.
Others say indefinate if aerated......
I go by the concept that if its in a fairly decent closed container that has minimal or no organic material in with it, and its aerated it should last for a very long time......Other than adjusting SG prior to use, thats all I do and I have had some for close to 1 1/2 months already in 7 gal sealed containers in a cool place out of the sun......It does just fine. I make up 50 gal batches and store it without aeration for as long as it takes to use it, be it a day or a month or two. I aerate it the day before I use it.
