Water change

Ok....My tank has now been set up for a month. It seemed to be collecting a lot of diatoms and hair algea....so today I did my first water change. My tank is 29 gallons........changed 4 gallons with distiled water (I was told never to use tap water on this site after I had already started that way). Im hopng that using the distiled water keeps the tank from having as much algae as I have been told. Im not too sure how often I should do water changes, but Im guessing evry two weeks????? 20%?????? Anyone have any advice or opinions?????

water changes should be performed weekly(usually 10%), because dilution is the source to pollution..so getting the "bad" out faster is better than letting it accumalate. and as far as the algae problems go..your tank is still pretty new, so you will have algae problems for a bit.. btw, are you running a protein skimmer?

Opinions very on the frequency and the amount of water changes. Some say weekly, some say Bi-weekly and others say monthly... usually up to 20% per-month. Find a system that is easiest for you and stick with that. The most important thing IMO is just making sure they get done... one way or another.

No...not right now. I was thinking about getting one....I just put it off since it is a FOWLR tank. Would that reduce algae growth????

in my experience the 10% a week is the best option unless things are going really bad then a 50% every once and a while isn't a bad thing to do. and i don't know about the tap water i started with is and everything thrived(in the beggining) but when i switched to R/O everything slowly started to get smaller, less colourful and started to die. once i got my levels balanced though everything worked out for the better. and who cares about algae, it's great for your snails, conchs, and shrimp
