you definetly need to do water changes but different people change out different amounts.
If you don't do the water changes you are never removing any of the yucky stuff in the water and you aren't replenishing the things your tanks needs.

Like Corally posted, there really isn't any hard set rule.
My tank has about 250 gallons of total water volume.
I change 10 gallons weekly, then 20 gallons on the first of the month.
Some may think that is excessive, but it works for me.
75 gallon tank, I would change 5 gallons weekly.
Good Luck!

well you definitely need to do them, but how much depends on your nitrate level. If it is not high, you would be fine doing a 5-10% weekly water change, but if they remain on the high end, a 20%-25% would be more appropriate.
In my 210, which as 250 gallons of water, I take out 40 gallons once per week because I have messy fish and I feed a lot.

You can do 5-10 % weekly, 10% every two weeks, 20% monthly. Opinions vary on this, and depends on how much fish and stuff is in your tank.

I do roughly 12.5% a week. I know it's an odd number but it's 15 gallons for a 120g tank. I can't pick up much more than 15 gallons and I have to carry it a good distance. I plan to get some 5 gallon buckets to make my life easier.
Distilled water can be bought for about .50 a gallon. You may be able to find it cheaper. I use an RO unit which should be more economical in the long run.

20 % of a 75 is around 15 gls. The cost depends on how and where you get the new water. Buying RO from a store and the cost of the salt mix you use varies from store to store, just as buying premixed water from a LFS does. On average it cost me about .30 cents a gal to mix my own water. I have my on RO/DI filter so with the cost of salt and electricity to run power heads and heater to mix I quess around that.
LFS around here charge around . 50 cents a gl. for saltwater.
