I get the fact water changes remove nasty stuff from tanks. I'm batteling slime algae and doing water changes. How soon will i notice a difference in the slime? I have all the lights off and added a power head. When will the water changes start making a difference?

Prior to the water change, I would take a power head and blow the slime off of everything and suck it out the best you can with water changes. You need to identify the problem. Generally, flow, over feeding, phosphates are the problem. To fight slime, you can't have too much flow! Generally, it should take 2-4 weeks to reverse and solve.

I have a feeling I know what happened. I had to tear my tank apart to catch the damsel that bites. I did that Monday and Tuesday I noticed the slime. I also think I am guilty of overfeeding. Am I doing right by keeping my lights in the tank off? ANd how long should I keep them off? I'm worried about my critters being in the dark.

If you could post a pic that would be great. By the way, your lighting is not fueling the algae but rather the amount of nutrients in the tank. Keep doing large water changes, make sure you have adequate flow. Only feed a little amount (what can be completely eaten in 30-40 seconds) every other day. Also look into some chemical filtration such as chemi-pure, purigen and rowaphos are the three that I use.

I posted pics of it in another thread I started but the pics are bad quality.
When the lights are off it goes away. I added another power head yesterday. I;m going to get a turkey baster tomorrow to try and suck it out. along with another water change.
