I am sure there are some who HAVE done it, but the main reason people don't do it is that water near the shoreline has pollutants. Ships, boats, jet ski's, little peeing children (OK, not really that one) all release pollutants. These all wash toward the shore. IMO, the only ocean water good enough to use is from far off shore.

Check with your lfs. Some of them sell sea water. A firend of mine has suggested that I do water changes with sea water. He has told me of a few good places to get the water. I agree getting water from shore could be risky. But you can try lfs.

Take a dive near where you are getting water. If there are coral like your grow in the area then it is safe to take the water. I will not put the water directly into the tank until I run it by the UV source to kill the all the bug that your coral might react to.

Most of the LFS here in fla get their water from the ocean,
I have used it its ok ,and I have got my own from 2 miles out,
I just feel beter making my own water, It just takes one bad batch to spoil a whole tank
