so to do a water change you take out the tank water out of the tank into a barrel.....then you put the new water in from another barrel into the tank???????????i know about adding the salt so i dont need to know bout that

no offense here, but if you have 339 posts, u should be able to do a water change.
Take out the nasty water, collect any floating scum at the top in the container. Dump the nastiness in the toilet or sink. Next
mix the amount of salt needed with R/O or distilled water. Let it sit for at least a half a day, a day to play it safe. Once the salt is dissolved, pour it in, and top off the water with more R/O or distilled water. Nothin to it, really. Good luck.

lol, my bad, he could top it off after draining it. 339 posts and not knowing much must mean a hell of a lot of questions.

I don't shut down my system to do a water change. I simply suck out the water using a Python in the bottom back corner of one tank (150 FOWLR) while refilling at an equal rate in my sump from my remote RO/DI reservoir. I have a several hundred gallon system and it is too much of a pain in the neck and also is un-necessary to shut it down for water changes. I do a 10% water change weekly since that is all the saltwater I am able to make at one time. This method of water changes has worked well for me the last several years.
