Yes, you have the general idea down.
You just want to make sure your sump is big enough to handle the water that will drain down. Only a small amount will, up to where the actual drain is.
You can put pads and all into your sump. That is how I run mine. It is not necessary though.
A wet/dry is similar to a sump, however, in a wet/dry, you have a pad, and a sump you usually have filter bags. Also, a wet/dry employs bio balls, whereas, you usually use a sump when you are going the more natural route with live rock.
