water changes

I keep the lights on so that I can see what is going on in the tank after adding the new water. I want to keep an eye on things to make sure all is well. Of course, I also test the water to keep tabs on things, but I am a visual learner. :D

well today i was sitting in my room looking at my tank and was about to do a water change and i was wondering if i should turn the lights off to reduce stress like you do when you add a new fish or a coral. so then i just started thinking so i posted here to see if any of you turned off the lights.

Maybe I'm doing things wrong, but I don't even turn the lights off when adding new fish. I like to acclimate them to everything, including the lights in my tank. And my fish are all doing fine.

it is recommended that you turn the lights OFF when adding new fish. Read the acclimation guid on swf they explain it pretty good. guess you dont have too but its a better ot be safe than sorry i think

the only time I turn off my lights other then the normal photo cycle is when adding new fish. Then I just turn off the MH's and leave the actinincs only.

I don't turn the lights off...my water changes are performed in the room behind my display. There is a sump and a 3 stage refugium back there that has nearly double the volume of my display. Much easier to do water changes back there...and no need to interupt the lighting schedule.

I always assumed the reason for dimming or turning off the lights was the fish have been in a dark box for shipping. I buy all my fish at the LFS so I saw no reason as they were in bright light all the time.

I usually perform water changes after the lights are out for the night. So the lights stay out until the next day.
