water quality

I recently purchased a power compact 196 watt lighting systmem for my 40 gallon tank and there is red slime algae and bubbles collecting all over my live rock. There has also been an excessive amount of green dust algae collecting on the glass and the subtrate. Anyone know what typically causes this. I just did a 20 percent water change. Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

With an upgrade in lighting, this is sometimes normal. There is an excess of nutrients in the water, and with the better lighting, the cyano and algae bloom. What are your test reading(nitrates, phosphates). Do a series of small water changes, and increase circulation in the areas of the cyano. How often do you feed? skimmer?

I do have a skimmer and I feed about once or twice a day. my nitrate levels seem to do okay, but I am concerned that this outburst will have damaging effects on the flowers in the tank(xenia, leather coral, polyps, ricordea)
