Water softener ad salt tanks

So where I live the water is pretty hard. We have a water softener that we add salt to, I'm just wondering if that is a pro or con for salt water tanks?

It shouldn't matter since you should not use tap water at all. Either invest in a RODI system, or purchase RODI from a retailer. Using tap water, hard or soft, will lead you to problems with algae, diatoms etc.

So that would explain the red algae growing alllllll over the place then huh?

So that being said, I looked online and there are a bunch of different ro/di units out there. Any recommendations? Prices seem to vary quite a bit for the 50GPD units, which is all I need.

Red algae is Cyanobacteria, and can be a real pest. Perhaps the easiest way to limit it is to improve water quality with some additional changes and increase water movement with powerheads (cyano hate water currents). I got my unit from airwaterice online at least 10 years ago, and love it.
