Ok, we are looking to get a new house. Problem? It has well water and also it has a water softner. So will the water softner hurt things? Also I know that I will have to go to a RO/DI system but will the softner hurt things even with it?

the softner wont efect your rodi unit. if Im thinking of the same thing the softness of water is measured by a dkh test kit or a kh test kit. not 100% sure about that part but I know once ran through a rodi it will be fine

The softener will actually help things for your RO by removing a lot of the metals from the water. That in turn will make your filters and membrane on your RO unit last longer. I have a well and a softener in my house and I have had my RO unit for over a year and still have not had to change out any of my filter cartridges on my unit.

I had the same concern when I bought my softener. It has done nothing but good for my tank.
Stuff started appearing what I didn't know I had (ie hitchhiker corals and kelps), the algae that I had been fighting died, and my mushroom multiplied to the point that I have been trading them to the fish store.
Good stuff all.
