Water Storage Containers...

Is this something I need to be concerned about when selecting water storage containers? I've found that many simply use plastic trash cans for RODI and Saltwater storage...wondering if I need to be concerned about toxins down the road.

make sure it is new. rinse it out well before using it
Actually, worried about the plastic breaking down over time and releasing chemicals into the water.

from what i have heard you want containers that are food grade containers usually saying NFS somewhere on the label, some might just state food safe, as far as i know rubbermade do make food safe containers. hope that helps

I havent used the Brute containers but YES it needs to be food safe ,, the regular plastic cans DO and WILL leach after a short time ( I found out the hard way) Now I use a Rubbermaid resin type tub from Tractor Supply They have premarked "areas" if you want to drill and use as a sump or plumb it into the system and are used as feed or water tubs for animals.

Are you talking about the black rubbermaid water tubs at the Tractor Supply? I was looking at those yesterday.

alot of people use them for sumps

or a 40g one (using to cycle my baserock)

but to store your DI water, use the brutes from HD/Lowes.

Nice, thanks! Are you using these for your sump? If so, can you post pictures of the plumbing?

Here's my Brute cans.
Top one is RODI storage water, bottom one is mixed saltwater.

I am using the 50g one (one without the base rock, the empty one). Havent done the plumbing yet, will do it tonight(have to do it tonight because tank is 3/4 full, DI water currently filling). I am also using a 27g container for my skimmer and will be building an algae scrubber. I have a 35g brute to hold DI water and a 20g brute for my ATO.
basically the 2 drains will go into the 27g skimmer first, with gravity overflows into the 50g sump, then the return pump back to the tank. One of the drains will T off into the algae scrubber.
I'll post pics once i get it done. I have a large build thread but not on this site.

Definitely interested in seeing the pics. Is there a reason you have the ATO coming from the 20g brute and not directly from the 35g?

dont have the ro/di unit in the same room as the tank and dont have drop ceilings to easily put a line in the room.
I can handle filling up a 20g container once/week.

YES that is the one.. 50 galon or larger is what is available here and we use BOTH lol
as far as the problems I had ...
Out of the blue I started to have a rise of ammonia and no matter what I did (ie: water changes) it kept getting worse so by process of eleimination I went through EVERYTHING in my system and all looked fine
THEN I checked my tap water ....all ZERO Ammonia
Filled the plastic can I had used all of this time ZERO Ammonia
Dropped a powerhead (no salt added yet) and circulated for 12 hours ...checked and had Ammonia readings of .5 or higher.
So all I was doing was ADDING ammonia with each water change EEEKKKKK!!!
Tossed the "old" can got one pictured above from TS and re-checked all PERFECT and has been for months the original "can" was only 3 months old.

not finished with the return so the lines are extra long. Soon as i figure out the best way to hook up the eheim, i'll cut it and finish the returns.
