Water Storage Containers

I have been battling a cyano out break and a little hair algae in my setup and I have reason to believe that my storage containers are leeching stuff back into my top off and mixed water. Water comes out of my RO unit nearly perfect but im still getting it. I do need to test the water though as my test kits are pretty old but in the meantime what does everyone use and what is safe for storing water in? currently using trash cans from lowes. not sure which ones they are I'll have to look later.

I use a 5 gallon plastic container that previously had drinking water in it. Whatever you use you should try to ensure that it is food grade IMO. I thing Brute containers have ones that are food grade but not sure.

For my water changes in the 225G I use a brute....for the w/c in the small tanks I use a kitchen garbange can from Walmart
and for the ro/di that I keep made up, I also use a kitchen garbage can from Walmart
 
all were cleaned and sanitized before use

Thanks for the help im pretty sure one of them is food grade brute can. the other I can't verify hmmmm I guess I have soemthing else to look into when i get home.

Just in case it isn't the water:
How old are your lights, and when is the last time you cleaned the power heads? I noticed my koralia PHs don't have the output they did when new, so the flow was slowed, cyano loves low flow…you can clean them up and soak them in vinegar, be sure to rinse them real good. Old bulbs will bring on the hair algae.

How clean are the containers? A friend recently had a similar issue with a large storage container, and he traced it down to some type of "film" that had developed on the inside of the storage bin over time that leached PO4 into his top-off water, and thus into his tank. Do you bubble the water in your storage container(s)?

BUT you still have to clean them....every few water changes in my brute, I soak the bottom section with white vinegar water solution.....then I clean the sides
 
I do the same with the small can I use for the smaller tanks
 
cleans off any residues

I now buy the IO in the 200G box...so no more buckets for me

I also buy the box stuff now and dump it in a bucket. Now I don't use all 20 buckets! I fill 3 of them up about once every week or so. The other buckets are stacked outisde. I won't be getting any more buckets either since I don't do water changes anymore.

my bulbs are due to be replaced phoenix 14000k 250 watt hqi bulbs are being replaced with aquamaxx bulbs tomorrow
Ive been tinkering with the flow. right now I have
a koralia 3
2 koralia 2s and a koralia 8 in a 150 xh. my flow should be great. my return is also another 700 gph.
Im going to clean the cans and adjust my powerheads this weekend. already re angled my return heads
 
also have a filterguys dual stage di add on unit that will be here monday
Can you tell I hate cyano?
