Water temp affected by lights?

I have a 40gal. with 140 watt lights all together. My question is will this dramatically affect the temp. of the water. I have the temp set at 77F and the heater looks like it is not in use, like the water is warmer than 77. What do you think?

I think you will be ok. If the temp rises to much take off glass tops if you have them. You can also have a fan blow on the tank.

the lighting on our tank highly affects our temp. we leave the lid off while we are home with a fan blowing on the water. at night because the lights are off i put the lids on and then do the same thing the next day.

Yes get a thermometer, and yes the lights could have a dramatic effect on the temp depending on the type of lights used, type of hood, and several other factors.

After you get your thermometer:D you can remove the glas top if you use one and put a little computer cooling fan in your hood. This will cause more evaporation and lower your temp considerably.

I have a thermometer and it says 77 but I have it at the bottom of the glass and not near the top where the light is, but I don't think that will make a difference. Will it?

If you have good circulation in your tank(which you should anyways) and the thermometer isn't covered by sand, then 77 is just fine. :)
