Water temperature

I have a heater in my tank that keeps the water consistantly at the same temperature. The past few days it has been relatively warm were I live, the temperature in my tank keeps rising. The heater is not on because it is above its setting. Is there something that can keep a tank cool or should I just put my air conditioner in now?

there are a few things
1 a chiller
2 fans blowing across that water surface.
but what is your temp at now?

I keep my tank temp at 82 constant.
what type of lighting are you using and what length of time do you have the lights on?
also what is the ambient room temp during the hotest point in the day ( or about)?
also if you dont have the air up and running and the tank temp keeps rising it might be a good idea to get it put in just in case plus you gotta do it for summer anyway. ;-Þ

along those same lines i live in sacramento and this is my first summer here. it's been about 95 most days the past two weeks and mon/tues should be 102. what are my options really for cooling down my poor fish when i go to work? when i come home from work usually the house is around 90 and my fish are at 82 or so. My tang's fins have been eroding since the heat set in two weeks ago. Please help!

my electric bill is just way too high... since putting in the tank, its about 50-75 more a month...
i am seriously considering a chiller.... i dont know how much of the electric bill is due to the MH lights, or due to me leaving my AC on all the time at 72 instead of 74 like i use to do…and summer is right around the corner and i can foresee my electric going up another 50 a month to keep everything in check.
Another thing to look into is…, what kind of hood do you have? i had a completely closed hood which kept the heat from the lights stationary above my tank... i removed the main piece of the hood that sits on top..and left the “frame” and just the front portion that was used to open and close the hood... since then, my temp went down at least 3-4 degrees...
i then went to home depot and got a flexible air duct..... (the thin aluminum with a coil that is usually used for clothing washers and dryers) I attached it to my fan on my lighting box and aimed it outside of the tank.. the temp went down another 2……
I plan on installing a few computer fans into the hood to move air around over the tank as well…maybe even a very small a/c and aim it inside the hood…..
but i think when i build my next tank (in wall tank) i will include an A/C duct in the closet, or just get an A/C unit for that room which i can run continuously..

Hey candi22, i know what you mean. i live in redding. its been about 100 all week then down to 90 yesterday and then 101 today and 105 tomorrow. Ny tank temp went up little with my PC but they have a 4 fans built in tehem but as for my temp my swamp cooler is in the front room with the fish about 50 ft away. i noticed my tank jumped also up to 82 and im watching it everyday....Maybe we could get together and see each others tank, there are not to many people where im from into reefs....

yeah, i'll try taking the front lid off my tank to let out some heat, and get a fan to blow on it. my only concern there is that my clownfish might try to jump out, he's a jumper occasionally.
i saw some guy online had mounted a big fan inside his cabinet over his filtration bucket system (not sure what those are called). when i get my new bigger tank i'll probably try that. then i won't have to worry about the suicidal fish issue.
