do i need to add salt to the water before i top off?

If you are referring to replacing evaporated water, NOOOO, because the water has evaporated but not any of salts. If you keep adding saltwater instead of dh20 or RO water, you will continually increase your specific gravity or salinity.

but i dont know exactly how much water evaporated? if i go over wont that change salinity?

Just add slowly and check the salinity. Slow and steady. HTH

Some people make a mark at desired water level. Others just know. Most importantly, you should constantly moniter your specific gravity (salinity) and adjust accordingly. I keep my tank full right to the level of the canopy or where the glass quits on my tank. When the level changes I am aware of it quickly because your lights shine through. Sort of my alarm mechanism so I don't forget to monitor it. Depending on your set-up, there can be lots of evaporation in just a day, so its important to keep watch.

We marked the water level line on our sump tank. About 1 1/2 gallons evaporates daily. Just have to fill to the line!
