You MUST have some kind of splash guard on an MH bulb. Most units wil have a peice of glass that covers the bulb.
Water splashing directly on a hot bulb could cause it to burst.

DE bulbs have a piece of glass covering the bulb - the SE bulbs have a built in glass cover.
You're right - that they "could" burst. However, I ran my bulbs (as stated) for about 3 years without a cracked bulb. They got dirty quick - and the occasional sizzle from the water splashing, but I used Ushio 10k's and those particular bulbs did not crack.
That's not to say a set of XM's won't... Who really knows for sure?
