I can't tell from the picture, but I've noticed some strands that almost look like a spider web strand coming from my live rock. It has to be coming from worms or something living in the rock. Maybe a way that they filter feed.
Hope that helps...

I read about this just the other day.
It might be something called a Vermetid gastropod. They're "a harmless, sessile snail that captures detritus and plankton with a mucus trap."
like a web...

different worms "spit" out different types of this "silky" stuff. have you seen a featherduster worm, or christmas tree worm? or any other type of worm like these, spins a cocoon like cylander to hide in and they put there "crown" or feathers out to catch their meals. well they use this web like substance to hide them selves and as a protection. if they are bugged or you try to move them they will spit this junk everywhere. it coated my whole tank one night. i couldnt see in the pic but from how you described it tht is waht it seems like.
i attached a pic. but the stem is the silky stuff when it takes form. but when used as a defence, or just when you move it the excess comes out it is a nasty web like substance.

What stock do you have in your tank? I have a six-line wrasse that makes a web at night to sleep in. Sometimes it floats around in the mornings until someone from my clean up crew can get a hold of it. I also have a feather duster that does exactly what dragonfli wrote about.
