hey dubb, almost everyone who starts a tank with cc ends up switching to sand. its a pain to maintain and sand looks so much better. switch now and cycle before adding livestock you will be much happier with it.
there are hundreds of posts on this site about people wishing they started with sand. once u add the livestock its a real pain to switch. i wouldnt put sand on top of cc. just get rid of the cc.

40 lbs should do you. it all depends how deep you want it to be.
