Weight question

I'm about to fill my 72 gallon bow front.. but before I do.. does anyone have a similar sized tank on the second floor of thier house?
I'd say it will weight about 500lbs filled with rock... I have it caddy corned in the room and the base is spread out (not on legs or anything) so I figured the weight would be distributed enough.

thanks.. that helps a little I guess.

If someone has a 90 gallon or something then that would make me feel a lot better.

My 75 is on my first floor, but I have a basement under it so that is the same as having it on a second floor. Been there almost a year and no problems...

You could try to find out which way the beams are running in the floor and set the tank up perpendicuar to them. You should be alright.

It all really depends on the construction of your home. Your calculation is off slightly. you should figure about 10 pounds per gallon with rock and everything. That would put the weight of your tank at 720 pounds, then there is also the weight of your stand. You could be looking at close to 800 pounds.

The corners of a house are it's strongest, particularly if it's the outside walls. I have a 72 fresh and a 75 salt on the second floor (working on getting more rocks for both) and I've had no problems with either... and I'd swear that this house was built in the 1700's by a drunk.

Up the estimate on the weight a bit.... I think salt water alone weighs like 10 lbs a gallon. Then the tank itself, stand, filtration, sump...and then the sand and rock on top of that. It can add up for sure.
(oops...see trainfever beat me too this!)

Yeah, salt water weighs in at just over 9lbs/gallon soo.... 72 gallons your looking at roughly 650lbs, plus the easy 100lbs LR and the 75+lbs LS... plus the weight of your tank and stand.... running a sump
yep.. just more weight..?? I wouldn't worry.... I have my 120 reef upstairs in my bedroom that weighs in over 1500lbs. all said and done, Not to mention the house was built way back in 1904
Took all precautions and put it right on the outside wall in the corner.. doin just fine....
But your tank could easily weigh 900lbs, so i would place on the outside wall of the house like me and fishguy said tho..
