Well, I've gone and done it!

After being out of law enforcement for 15 years, I miss it too much so if all goes well, within a few week I'll be wearing this:

and driving one of these:

I'm not quiting my day job. I am becoming part of the auxiliary Florida Highway Patrol. I have to go through some testing and the one thing that might kill me is being color blind. I have been told that it will disqualify me but they will test me to see how severe it is. If it's not too bad and depending on what color it is, I may be ok.
My friends think I am nuts because it is all volunteer as I don't get paid yet I'm out taking the same risks with my life as the paid officers. I am full officer with all the powers with the only difference being I only have arrest powers when I'm off duty. My reason for wanting to do this is I just miss the brotherhood of law enforcement and money is not longer my driving force in my life. Plus its a very rewarding feeling in the things you can do. I don't get that with my current job.
Wish me luck!

Thanks guys! I had a typo in the original post I changed. What I meant to say (and corrected) is that the only difference is I don't have arrest powers when I'm OFF duty. When I'm volunteering, I have all the same powers as a full time Trooper. I will have to go through their firearms, self defense and a lot of other training. I've been through it all before though and it's not too bad. I just have to dedicate the time for it while still working my day job.

are you going to be patroling on the cbr??
I wish I could. Could you imagine me in full motorman uniform, 40 caliber Barreta, and Arai full face helmet painted up to look like FHP colors on my 1000RR pulling up behind some kids on their crotch rockets? That would be classic. They are always talking about running from the cops on the bike forums. I wonder if they would run then?
Funny you should mention it though. One of my plans is if this works out is to work with the FHP and see if they will let me take a track bike and have a set are sharkskins painted up in an FHP scheme and put them on the bike and get a set of custom racing leathers made in an FHP uniform theme. Sort of a way to show the sportbike community that we aren't all bad.

Now you have the power to put us all in cuffs.
Well, remember your fellow riders and give us a break...K?
Well, if you can catch us that is.

I'm always pretty easy going and I don't plan on being any different at this. I started the process tonight. It's going to be a lot of work up front but I found out tonight that being color blind may disqualify me. I am going to go ahead and get the eye exam out of the way and see what happens. Supposedly, the color and severity matter so I will see. I'm going to call tomorrow and see what I can set up.

Sure thing! I guess that put's Ru in the back seat in the cage.
Hey Tizzo,
Yes, red/green are my colors but I can tell them apart just fine. I am what they call Partial Deuteranomalia which means I'm partially affected by green but can distinguish colors in real life. I'm not sure if that will disqualify me or not. I have to make some calls.
Does anyone around the Jacksonville, Fl area have access to a farnsworth lantern they could set me up with? It's an alternative test that can often be passed for aviation.

Well, I'm pretty bummed. They won't let me because I'm color deficient in red/green. Nothing they can do about it. No one knows why they have they requirement. There is another test I might seek out but I don't think it will do any good. I need to start another thread about it.

I too am color DEFICIENT. not color blind. I am 27 and I had to renew my licence in august. The color test they gave me gave me a hard time. I told them the first color and they said yes. The next color I told them they didn't say correct. Here I am thinking I am not going to get my licence renewed and I will have to see a eye doctor to confirm what I know. I inherited this from my father. blues - purples, green - brown, yellow - green. When you start to blend these colors it is unbelieveable.
I deeply feel for anyone who has this problem.
