I want to give my fish a "varied diet"...so far I have just been feeding frozen and flake food purchased from my local fish store. Any suggestions on food I can pick up and safely feed from my local fish market. Someone suggested to me that I purchase a mussle or a clam, wash it with warm water, pry it open a bit, and stick it in my tank. Is that safe? How long can I keep it in there?

This may or may not be a good idea depending on the type of fish you keep. If they aren't able to tear the clam into bite size peices and gobble it up, you could have a clam just rotting in your tank and blowing up your nitrates.
A better idea might be to chop up the clam or mussel and only feed peices and just as much as your fish can eat in a few minutes.

Thanks for that information. It makes sense to me. I will just add a little. Definetly don't want to screw up my nitrates.
