The bio-balls are just there to provide surface area for the bacteria to grow; ie: bacteria that breaks down the ammonia to nitrites, and bacteria that breaks down the nitrates into nitrates. If you have enough live rock in the tank, you don't need any bio-balls in the system because the bacteria grows in and on the live rock.

Is this one you are building?

Hopefully. I replaced a small tall (maybe 15-20) tank with a 75g, now the small one is just laying around and I was bored so I wanted to try to build one. My wife has a canaster filter on the 75, so I've been trying to slowly add other bio-media. I managed to get about 100 lbs of LR in the display so far.
