wet dry setup

When a wet/dry setup is used, are the bioballs supposed to be above the waterline al the time and only wet when return water goes over them?

that is correct it is supposed to be puoring over them but not submerging them.

So then, this is definitely incorrect. I guess I need to build a box to fit above the sump to hold my bioballs. I still want to keep a large volume of water in the sump so I can do 10gal waterchanges from here rather than from the DT.
