Wet/Dry Trickal?? Do I need

my current set on this 55 gal tank is a 20 gal long refguim with sea grapes (that are growing like crazy). This has a 4" dsb. I had one in the tank, but it did not look good to me IMO. Also, and excaliber skimmer. In the main tank there is 60+ lbs of live rock and a 1 grain thick layer of cc.
All water params are on the mark, and everything looks good, fish happy, all that stuff. I just built a trickal/refguim/sump for my buddy that he is putting on his tank (his idea, i built it. Gotta put that in there because I will be showing him this thread), and I was going to do the same, but when I did some research, all I heard was horror stories about them. Any Ideas.

The trickle filter with bio-balls or things like that is definitely not needed or recommended. However, using it as a refugium/sump can be fine. The setup you built would determine how good it can be. Definitely do not use filter media in it.

I don't have one. My refguim sump is a 20 long. I built one for my buddy because he said he wanted one. Any links to any thing that I could show him to convice him otherwise??

no, not needed, and to that i will add
since your water si good(if this is the case)
IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT
in yoour case if there is no apparent need for one, i definitely would not add one(personally i prefer not to use them, except for aggressive tanks)
