wet/dry use bio balls or LR

I'm getting a new wet/dry today It comes with the bio balls should I remove them and put in LR the sump is 36 gal. on a 110 If I should go with the LR how much to put in and should I put in any sand or anything else ? maybe some cleaner clams ? thanks.

Go with live rock. I like to use 'rubble' in the wet/dry. I would shoot for about 4-5# of rubble in a system your size. NO sand IMO. Rock alone is great.

I agree the LR rubble will do more than bioballs

I put in there like 10-15 LB of LR its a 30 gal sump...what's rubble small pieces of rock ? like the kind that falls off or breaks off the tiny pieces ?

Either will work fine, your primary filtration is your live rock in the tank.

rubble is just smaller pieces of LR broken pieces and such to give you more surface area in there. plus with the smaller pieces you can fit more than if you used the larger pieces.

I got the super skimmer 125 on the right then the sump about 24 gal. the return pump is mag 12 I hope thats a good one It cost $150. I also have 1 Chemi-pure Carbon in the sump I need a few more for this tank. Then you got the filter/foam pads then LR about 15 lb's maybe more It goes deep back there I'm not quite sure of the dimensions of this wet/dry but it's nice I'll get the dimensions measured later, thank you

I would fill the area under the 'egg crate' with rock rubble to increase your bacteria, including anerobic bacteria. Also a nice place for pod development even tough you will lose some to your skimmer.
I posted in your Mag12 question that it might not give you enough flow. However, from your picture you 'appear' to have lots of water moving through your system. Since you already have the Mag 12 see how it goes.

when using rubble for filtration, is light necessary for the bacteria to stay alive on the rubble or i can just use a closed bucket and run water from my main thank through it?

My LFS suggested a wet/dry with bioballs and has room for refuge for my 125 gal reef. From what I've read, the bioballs aren't necessary if i set up LR, a small clean up crew, and a small light in the refuge. Also, I think I've read that the refuge is not necessary if I keep the bioballs. Your opinion? Am I wasting my time and money if I keep the bioballs and LR in the refuge?
