What's an affordable, reliable varmint rifle?

I just came back from fishing in maine and even there .22 ammo is very hard to find, I live in ny and its hard to find here aswell. Due to that I use my 17 hmr cal. Much more and ammo for that is easier to get. I use it for game up to wood chuck sized. They say it can be used for coyote, but idk bout that lol
