What a little rock & roll will do

I'll make a very long story short. I teach high school math & science and I hate to generalize but for the most part, the "metal heads" or "stoners" as we called them in high school are not very good students. On Fridays, my students are allowed to listen to the radio/CD for the last 20 minutes of class (only if they have aquired enough points and they have been good behavior wise.) Though they have the ability to listen to it every Friday, it's only about once or twice a month due to behavior or other issues.
Anyway, this one Friday a while back one of the kids asked if he could put a CD in my stereo and I said yes. When he opened the CD player there was an AC/DC disc of mine in there. He said, "Hey, Mr. C, is this someone from second period?" I looked at the disc and said, "No, it's mine." He looked at me like I was from another planet or something. He said, "You like AC/DC?" "Of course I like AC/DC, I grew up on them. I also like Van Halen, Metallica, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Ozzy." Being that I went to high school in the early '80s, this was the music of choice. It was either Motley Crue or Spandau Ballet (sp?) Yuck!
Ever since the metal heads found out I was once one too (and still am in a way) They are doing much, much better; everone of them! I bring in my CDs and they just freak out! "How can someone as old as you like Ozzy?" They ask. Being that I am all of 36, I'm obviously too old to listen to Iron Maiden (at least in their eyes.) I wish I would have learned this eight years ago when I first began my teaching career, it would've made for many less frustrating days.

Right on Tang Man! T be honest, When I was growing up and listening to such classics as Highway to Hell, Whole Lotta Rosie, Dirty Deeds, etc,  I never thought I'd still be listening to them at 37. The problem is today's music sucks! All this hip hop crap...I wish it would just go away. Believe it or not, it is slowly going the way of disco and metal, kinda fading away. Four or five years ago, everyone listened to hip hop
(kids) Now, at least half of the students at the school I teach at wear T-shirts like Thin Lizzy, Motley, Kiss, Megadeth, Metallica, AC/DC, Ozzy, Van Halen, Black Sabbath; it's so cool
The other day, one of my students had on a Kiss T-shirt from the (Rock n Roll Over album) I said, "That's the first concert I ever went to." He looked at me and said, "You gotta see the original Kiss in all their make up?" I gloated so much. I said, "Yeah, I also saw them on their reunion tour in '99." And to think back 22 years when my Dad sid to me day in and day out, "Son, turn off that screamin crap you call music!" Now, it helps me reach my students. Thanks to my all-time favorite rockers... Bon Scott, Angus Young, Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, Diamond Dave, Eddie Van Halen, Ozzy, Randy Rhoads (R.I.P.) Ace Freley, Gene Simmons, Joey Ramone (R.I.P)

Andretti, I totally agree with you about reaching kids through music. Earlier this year I played "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. There was a research activity tied in with that and my kids went nuts over it. I can't tell you how many times throughout the year my students would ask to hear it again. Hey, speaking of school, when are you guys out? We got out last Friday. :jumping:
My principal played "Hit the Road Jack" over the intercom as the kids were leaving!

This is just proof you can't judge a book by its cover. < this happens to me all the time. I love rock and roll . I am a huge fan of Metallica, Pink Floyd, Alice in chains, Nirvanna, stp, Poe, Lenny kravitz, korn, System of the down, U2, cold play. Just to name a few. I love going to concerts, and I am leaning to play the electric guitar.
I would rather my children listen to rock, pop, country, than most of the rap now a days.
But if they end up liking other music thats fine too. But as long as im driving I have total control of the radio.

If you haven't seen the movie "School of Rock" watch it, it rocks!! Personally, I think some type of music appreciation that touches on all types of music not just Mozart, Bach, etc.... should be taught in schools, it is a HUGE part of history and culture all over the world! That said I do love me some ROCK!

My kids sorta freak when my wife and I know the lyrics to the songs they just found out were cool. Sometimes we lose them in all the big hair. . . .
I saw AC/DC in concert once. You gotta love a band that brings their own CANNONS!! (For those about to rock)

Hey Dory, that's a good idea. I also did something like that. I let the students pick any song (no swearing, drugs, or --- in the lyrics) I know that takes away 97.6% of their choices, but there is great music out there that is not filled with 157 curse words and every female body part mentioned every other word. So their assignment was to choose a song, make a copy of the lyrics for the class, play the song, and finally give a presentation on how that song influenced/changed their lives. Their presentation was not only about how the song influenced them, but what the songwriter(s) were trying to convey with their lyrics. It went so good; I was more than pleased. But like they say...there's always one. One student presented (or tried) to present Motley Crue's "Ten seconds to love." Well, I knew what the song was about and know every word in the song as well. So when "Joey" passed out the lyric sheet and I saw what choice he made, I literally pulled the plug. His defense was based on the fact that there were no curse words in the song, but it's an explicit "narrative" about the birds & the bees. BTW Dory, my last day is tomorrow, June 2nd. :cheer:
:jumping:  :D No more of this >
for another 77 days!! All plenty of time to get my 300 gallon :happyfish tank up and running. I'm building the stand, canopy, lighting system, and ???

The thing I think is funny about music is the rotation it makes. If you think back, in the 80's, 60's music was pretty big as far as a younger crowd goes. Go to the 90's, it was the psycadelic music of the 70's. Fast forward, it is now the 2000's, sticking to the trend the 80's would be up, and of course, they are. Music seems top have a 20 year rotation back into modern culture.

I am 34 and have a 15 year old son. For Christmas I took him shopping and he picked out two T-shirts. One was AC/DC and the other Metallica. I graduated in 89 and that was the music I listened to in Jr and Sr High.

Come on over Dory, tell your hubby to bring his engineering skills too :D I remember your canopy and stand you posted a while back.
Isn't it funny how we cannot wait for the end of school, and after a few weeks or so we get bored? :notsure: This was a really tough year, so I'm going to enjoy the time off. The kids are going to summer camp, :cheer:
and the wife and I are going to Vega$ for a week, and then it's off to Cancun when the kids get back. Have a relaxing summer and recharge those batteries

I'm a straight A student and my music of choice is the old school metal. I have every Metallica CD and listen to most of the bands mentioned =). At my youthful age of 17, it's surprising how many people give me the "Oh my goodness! You listen to so and so??" thing. Everyone assumes that if you listen to that kind of music, you're a bad student or you don't have any values. I took up electric guitar over a year and a half ago and was inspired to do so because of this music. It's one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done. In conclusion, have hope in the younger generation. We're not all rap-loving, ungrateful snots. :D

I'm 17 and my choice of music would be Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rush. All of their songs are alot of fun to play on Bass, especially YYZ, Freewill,2112, Young Lust, Get Up and Jump, and Mellowship Slinky in B Major. And I got my little brother , 10, into AC/DC and Ozzy, and he got more into it when he started playing guitar. I still dont understand what people see in Rap and "Screamo"

No no.. Metallica isa great band. I'm talking about these new young kid bands with the unecessary(sp?) screaming. I'm not saying screaming is bad, I got the new System of a Down CD and it's awesome. I'm not saying young kid bands are bad... just the unecessary(sp?) screaming is annoying.

My manager loves the fact that i am one of the only people that appreciates his type of music. No one likes metal as much as me and him... we will go out to his or my truck and rock out before a tough shift.... or even in the middle of slow shifts... i always have new stuff for him to listen to and hes got more old stuff for me to listen to.

Rush is a great band with mass amounts of talent. I had the 2112 CD playing in my car for a few days last week. "Leave That Thing Alone" is one of my favorite songs by them, along with "A Passage to Bangkok." I also recently heard their live rendition of "Xanadu." That's a pretty killer song. Gotta love those guys. (=
