I am not a expert on the octopus except that I know they don't live to long and they can get out thru almost any size opening. I would pass on that idea, not worth the trouble unless you are really into them.

wow! would you look at all those tanks puffer has! :D
ok on the octo note:
they will escape through almost any opening, they don't live long (like 2yrs max), if they get nervous or feel threatend they will ink the tank (similar to the way a boxfish will release it's toxins in the water) the ink will kill the octo in most cases. Octos are very very smart creatures, some would say possibly the most intelligent marine creature. All in all, they really arnt worth all the trouble, alot of times they have weird feeding habits (such as only eating at 4:00am)..they are very boring animals to watch, you hardly ever see them unless its feeding time, in conclusion I would pass if I were you, espicialy if you are a newbie :)

Regarding my tanks. When we were given the chance to list them I thought it was for our profiles. Didn't realize they would show on every post (not that that bothers me). Don't let the numbers fool you I just happen to love salt fish and got carried away a bit. I do love to show them off tho and anyone in my area feel free to contact me if you want to stop by and see them (admission is free to SWF members lol).

in spite of everything said about octopus,i think that it's worth haveing a octo they have interesting habits and are very cool to watch.just don't have anything else in there with it they can eat. there life span is very short about two years ,but don't let that bum you out i think that is what salt water fishkeeping is all about interesting creatures !!

I too, am looking at adding a "special" tank with just an octupus. Now I have talked to many about the disadvantages and the biggest is their escape abilities. The other disadvantage is that they are not to be considered by any definition a "community tank fish. The tank I aquired (and I am currently cycling) is a 40 gal tall. Water quality is also critical, along with lighting and temperature. I have had previous exper. with these secrative creatures and the only reason I don't have one now is that I moved and had to sell my previous Octupus. Seal the top and make sure that NO ONE plays around with the top. Good luck, BobMac  null

I have 4 tanks from 10g to 100g, one being a 55 with an octo in it. By far he's the best pet I have. He will take fish out of my hand, and is always flashing many colors. No, they don't live long, but thier cost is low (30-50) so, it's not that bad to replace them. Once you have one, you will see how much fun they can be.
