What am I doing wrong?

I have lost a few fish in my brief salt water career! The levels seem fine. I have two emperor 400 filters on it and nothing else. Should I substitute one of these for a protien skimmer? If so which one?

I wouldn't have a SW tank w/out a skimmer.
What size tank & provide more details on what you have in your tank

amistad, please post your exact water parameters - ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph. What's your temperature? What's your SG? Do any of the above fluctuate? How long has your tank been up an running? What type of fish died (some are less hardy than others)? Did they all die at the same time, or was it at different times? What kind of water do you use? Is it possible they were poisoned (windex is a major culprit most of the time)? answer these questions, and we'll take it from there.
You should have a skimmer, but that's not the cause of death... a skimmer just removes particles that float around in your tank, so unless the fish choked on a particle that could've been removed by a skimmer, that's not your problem right now (but i would recommend getting one sometime soon).

I have a 72g bowfront which has been up since thanksgiving of last year. I just took a sample of my water to a LFS and they said that the levels are fine. My sg is fine as well. the temp right now is 81. I lost a fox face, a bi color angel, a dragonette and a few hermits (not all at once) Also my lta is shrinking! It doesn't want to eat the "krill?" that I feed it. I know it ate one cleaner shrimp and one fire shrimp a while ago but nothing since. I have the appropriate lighting for it.

what kind of lighting do you have on the tank. If you don't have at least VHO lighting, that's the reason your LTA is shrinking, it's dying. LTA's are photosynthetic, and therefore need a lot of lighting in order to process. This is also probably the reason he's not eating well.
Saying "fine" for water parametes is not good. I need to know the exact levels. If you don't have testing kits, you should buy some soon, as this is crucial to keeping a healthy tank. "fine" for fish might not be "fine" for an anemone. Did your fish die all at the same time, or was it kind of a "domino" effect (they died like a week apart). After they died, did you have the water tested? Did you remove them right away. My hypothesis is that one fish died, and spiked your ammonia, which caused the next fish to die, which caused the next fish to die, etc.
Sorry if i sound mean, i'm not at all!!!
I just want to help you figure out what's going on in your tank!

Jenn is not mean--she has helped me out tremendously. She is one of many that doesn't have to log on to this message board & help other people out who are having problems. Jenn is cool! :cheer: what are your exact levels in the tank now?
