I have just started a saltwater tank with live rock about 2 months ago. I have been plauged by dead fish and brown alge growth. I have got my water tested and found thta my Nitrate level was way too high because of over feeding. This killed all of my fish. i let the tank sit for a week and my levels corrected themselves. However, I got two new damsels and one of them died yesterday (2nd day of owning fish)could this be a PH problem? Also I have brown alge all over my live rock. Is this killing it, and can I do anything to correct it? Please help, I'm getting very frustrated!

If reefers are going to help they need more info about your tank ie filter, lighting, livesand, lbs of live rock, and water parameters ect..

Like I said, I'm new to this so I really didn't know what affected the results. I only have about 5 lbs of live rock. 29 gal aq. 50/50 light. crushed corel for bottom and my filter, not quite sure what it is called. It has a bio-wheel, and other than that looks like filters I have had for fresh water tanks. That is all that I'm really aware of.

Normtp1-
First off, write down everything in your tank- including water parameters and how many fish. Even the ones that went to the big aquarium in the sky... ;) From all the reading&research I've done, a smallish reef tank's water changes quite a bit (kinda unstable).
Im glad you found out,and corrected, your feeding problem. Once again, post everything in your tank to the smallest detail. Also include the filter sponges(these can be a nitrite factories, esp. if not cleaned often). How long we're your fish in your tank? Also was your live rock cured when you purchased it? I have a ton more questions but, if you would like, feel free to email me... :p If I can't answer(im still learning myself!) I know trey, mr salty, beth, sammy, and every other shark can help you!

Good luck and hang in there because the people on this board know what they are talking about, its totally worth it, and we all make mistakes!!
ps- I would buy yourself a good water test kit(I use aquarium pharmaceuticals, inc. and it tests for nitrites, nitrates,PH,and ammonia)and eventually you'll add more test kits. About the brown algae, I just use a scrubber and, of course a bunch of astrea snails! I would look into adding more liverock(look for cured, esp. because or your livestock) Ive researched and it looks like 1#to 1&1/2# per gallon for reefs. Also, in my opinion, I might look into adding live sand(2-3 inch bed, instead of the crushed coral you have in your tank ;)
Last question: What invertabrates do you have? Anything poisionous?
Keep in touch and hang in there!! What salinity do you keep your tank at? And are you having trouble with heat(weather-wise?) Paulytee-It will all be worth it in the end!!!

i hate hearing stories of fish dying because people were irresponsible. they deserve better. no offense.

I am still new to this myself but I can tell you some of my experiences. first off, you will probably need more live rock. If you quarantine your fish before you add them to your tank, it might solve some of the mystery and you can treat them directly in there without harming your other tank inhabitants. Is your tank a fish only tank or do you have inverts in there too? Are you acclimating your fish properly? What do your fish look like before they die? Are they eating? All these questions are important to help solve your problem. As far as the 29 gal tank having water issues, I have 2 tanks, a 25 gallon and a 32 gallon and I have never ( honestly never) had a problem with my water and I check it every week. When my fish die, it isn't from the water, usually ich or something like that. My fish do a lot of stress, I do day care and the kids are always standing a the tank so I need to add fish that don't get stressed as easily. Damsels ( thats what you have) they are usually pretty hardy. I have 1 damsel left after 8 months who has survived ich 3 times. I hope I have helped a little or at least eased you mind to the fact that your not the only one who has problems. Read more posts on the board, you will definately get good advise. Good Luck.

playtime,
what do you do to get ick that often??? or is that standard?
or is it the sam ick that never actually gets killed off but just re-cycles and blooms in your tank?
