Oh what a time I had with that.
If some of you don't know what I mean....Imagine watching all your inverts die withing two minutes. Dead shrimp, dead crabs, dead snails, even dead flatworms, bodies lying everywhere.

Here is what my last batch of Instant Ocean did to me. I know, alot of you have all heard this before, but it still burns my buns....
All shrimp dead
all hermits dead
all snails dead
all emerald crabs dead
tiny starfish dead
flatworms were floating around the tank in agony, that part doesn't hurt my feelings.
Corals in pain and suffering, getting dark in color. Candy cane coral looks like it is dying. All others seem to be recovering slowly.
Leathers shedding, xenias balled up and or slumped over, no polyps were extended on any coral for three days, but are coming out now, the 4 BTA's were elongated but with tight tenticals, weird looking. Galaxia frag looks like someone took a flamethrower to it.
Who knows what it did to my infuana and other benthos? Probably killed much on the microscopic level. Tank recycling.
Fish breathing hard and also darkend in color for a while, would not eat for over a day.
Emergancy water change that night, with saltwater from an LFS. Added large batch of fresh Carbon and new polyfilter to see if Copper was involved, pad did not turn blue so no copper evident.
As to what happend, when testing the alkalinity afterwards it was unreadable, off the scale on the salifert test, did not find out what PH was. Calcium seemed to be sucked right out of the tank as well as magnesium.
Took IO salt down to LFS and mixed up batch with my water and he tested the same results on the alkalinity, off the scale.
Sent sample salt to IO headquarters in Mentor, Ohio on Tuesday 9th. We will see what happens with this sample.
May this never happen to any of you
Thomas
Turns out it was a massive alkalinity overdose, bad bucket of IO salt....I've still got it too.
Oh and Squidd, at least one flatworm lived, and has had many children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren....etc..

Not really sure on this part, but I think it takes two...

Hey, I am sorry about your tank, wouldn't wish that kind of "surprise" on anybody...
Is that a C&P from like a year ago or did this happen again recently...?

That was from way back when it happend, The sample I sent to Randy Farley came up with the 95dKH. I was sent two 150gal boxes of salt from IO which didn't do diddley to my system, no coralline growth, low magnesium which allowed the alk and cal to fall time and time again even though I was addin mag. It wasn't until I switched to Oceanic that I had coralline explode in my tank and much much better coral growth.
Thomas
Oh and flatworms reproduce by fission so they can just split.

I've used IO, --, Oceanic, NSW and Tropic Marin plus a few others....the only one I avoid is Oceanic, its way too inconsistent for me. I've been using TM for the past few months.

I've always used instant ocean (5-6years), I don't think I've ever seen another brand at a lfs or ***** (gotta get supplies somewhere when you live in a small town)

I think you can get most any brand in a 200g or so bucket.
That study was no joke. How can people still want to use IO after reading that :scared:
