What can I use for a sump ?

I am trying to put a sump under my 55 gal tank. My problem is that I want to put the sump in my stand, but the floor of my stand is only about 10 inches in width.
My local lfs says that I need a 29 long tank for the sump, but it is too wide. What size do you recommend?
I have read some people on this forum uses a rubbermaid tub to make a sump. Is that something people would recommend. If so, do you have to have dividers in the sump like I have seen in ready made sumps ?
Sorry for all of the questions. One of the main reasons that I want to do a sump is to get my skimmer, filter, and such off the back of the tank to give it a cleaner look.
Any help would be appreciated.

The dividers will help keep bubbles outta the display tank, as well as keep differeent compartments of the sump completely seperate. Not necessary, but unless you want tons of microbubbles I'd highly suggest it. It'll also give you a place to keep your return pump free of whatever else you have in the sump.

I've got the same problem your having. I have a store made sump but I wanted to increase my water capacity. A long story short a 10 gal bucket fits very nicely under my stand. I have my skimmer in my store bought sump and my heaters and other unsightly equipment in my Lowes brand bucket

of coarse there was the down side of buying another return pump
