How deep does it have to be to house anerobic bacteria to help get rid of nitrates?

A DSB is usually 3-6 inches.

More on the 5-6" side, rather than less than that. This system also requires sand sifters; either detrivores like crabs, starfish, etc, or fish that burrow, like wrasses and gobies. Or, both!

5+" of gravel with detrivores.

Thanks for the info guys, is it that miracle mud stuff you speak of? i want to put a DSB in the refugium I am making, I think it might be too hard to redo my whole tank, but I might! Who knows... any ideas on how to redo the bottom? should I remove all LR and just add onto my existing LSB (2.5" or so) or what?
