OK, im wanting to really start a post that people will debate over for a while...
im only 17 and still in a learning stage and hear alot of different opinions... in school i have a good friend that is extremly religous and believes that the earth is only thousands of years old and does not believe any carbon dating or any of that is accurate and gets really mad when scientist's say they found a fossil from over 160 million years ago and will debate people to his death... but i do believe this earth could be over a millions years old and do believe in some sort of "EVOLUTION" and still believe in god at the same time... i want some people inputs on thier opinions on how the earth was created and so forth and how old you think the earth really is.
KEEP IT FRIENDLY PLZ BUT DEBATE VERY WELL TRY NOT TO USE NAMES!!!

My theology is that God could have used evolution to create life. I can explain how I feel about it more in depth l8er, I just am so tired

religious debates will generally get to a point of needing to be locked up.
Other debates/conversations going on right now are the "Islam cartoon" thread......the War in Iraq is not over war on terror and FEMA thread. All very well thought out responses that everyone seems to be keeping a level head on. Creation and Evolution on the other hand---historically speaking at SWF.com.....brings out some ugly responses and usually ends up getting locked or deleted due to some immature responses etc....

well, there was a thread dealing with this not too long ago... I dunno how old the earth is, but i don't believe it's billions of years old... could be millions. I believe God created us in his image, and i believe in the "survival of the fittest" part of evolution. The part of evolution that says we've evolved from one-celled organisms is a load of crap IMO (hope this doesn't offend anyone
)... However, i believe that we still look the same as we did from the beginning. God created us in his image... why would he allow us to evolve into something totally different? JMO

That was the thread awhile back that was about this same subject titled " coral reefs take millions of years to grow " Had over 500 post in it. A search shows nothing so the SITE must have deleated it.

I think a couple of our "former members" went on a bombing spree and got that thread deleted. It was a good thread...
I believe in God.
I believe man's sin seperates us from God.
I believe Jesus died on the cross to allow our sins to be forgiven if we accept Him
I believe in the Bible.
Now, having said that, I've got a degree in Biology with an emphasis in Marine Biology. To me, science proves there is a God more and more everyday. To see the complexities of a single cell and believe that is "random mutations" is simply beyond my understanding.
To the original poster, your friend needs to be careful. The Bible account of Genesis can be taken literally. The account, however, can also be taken less than literally. Genesis is not a science book. "In the beginning God.." that's how Genesis begins. God wanted His role in Creation understood... not a time line (remember God created time).
Read the account of Genesis carefully and you'll see "time" as we on earth know it was created on day 4. That leads a great bit of question as to what a "day" in Genesis actually was referring too.
I'm all for interpreting the Bible literally, but that has to be done through a systematic approach looking at historical context, literal context, etc. Sometimes we Christians get bogged down on the miniscule details and over look the "big" picture.

see i completely agree about the DAYS things i do believe that gods days could have mean a million years or whatever and that his days were no doubt different than our days and i do believe the earth is way over a million years old but at the same time do believe in some forms of evolution... now saying that im not convinced that man evolved from apes or whatever although we do look somewhat similar... hope everything i said makes sense

1journeyman, I read a very good book a while back that explains this "time" situation quite well. According to the author, up till the last day or so (don't quote me, been a while), the bible is describing creation using "universal time". (I can't remember all the details now, you'd have to read the book). The reason for using this time was that the book wasn't interested in describing HOW the earth evolved, it was interested in the day man was created. At this point, the "time" shifts to earth days, and that is where the rest of the bible continues.
This may not have made any sense, but I strongly recommend you read the book if you are interested in this evolution/creation debate. It definitely shows how science and religion actually agree quite well.
Its:
"The Science of God" by Gerald L. Schroeder

Also, the book argues that the way words in the original language were worded, it doesn't say that Adam was "created from nothing", but rather, his soul was "created". The author says that the Bible implies there were many other "humans" around at the time of Adam, but that they lacked a soul.
It gives many arguements that make you go...hmmmmmmmm.

I believe it's going to be a long, hot summer. I also believe that souls come from Heaven. Therefore, I was with God when the earth was created. I simply forgot the answer as to how. There is a story that we are born knowing all that has happened before our birth. At birth (after the soul is given) an angel puts his finger against our lip and says "hush, don't tell what you know" and we forget. This is why you have a cleft in your upper lip.
I guess by the time we know for sure we're worm food so I don't spend much time dwelling on it. Fact is, we're here so we should make the best of it. Anyone for tea?

I believe that we crawled out of the ocean, looking much different than we do now, and evolved into what we are today. I'm not one of the ones who believes that we were created in any image.
