I noticed that my glass top gets salty and blocks/reflects a lot of light. I would like to go without it but I think that I would loose alot more water due to evaporation. what do you guys do?

I have wood canopy over my tank with no glass cover. I replace evapered water every day or every other day. IMO, i feel the water gets better gas exchange and the light penatrates the water better.

i have a glass top also, it gets a film or calcium build up and blocks the light. about once a week i clean it off and use a vinegar and water mix and it cleans the build up off of the glass top. works good for wiping the outside of the tank off also

Custom built canopy with no cover...evaporation on the display & refugium is around 1 gal per day. Better for gas exchange & light penetration in my opinion. Plus I got really tired really quick of cleaning those covers!!

I have a canopy with no glass over my tank. After breaking a couple and cleaning them I decided to do without it.

No cover- just my DIY lights made with vinyl gutters- with 220 watts of VHO and 80 watts of NO, i need to replace about 1 gallon of water every other day.... but my O2 level is always good, and i am sure this wil help the cooling in the summer.....

Glass that is used to make glass tops for aquariums generally blocks up to 20% of your light. I have a wooden canopy with no glass tops. Better gas exchange with no tops, just a little more evaporation. Top off tank everyday and no problems. Glass tops also seem to keep aquarium water warmer. Take the tops off and a lot of heat escapes. That may not seem important until you get a lot of light over a tank.Rendos Reef

Hi,
wood canopy with glass for my PC lights to sit on. And yes I do clean the glass every few days. While it may be true that the glass blocks some of the lights, if you don't have anything covereing you tank, make sure to keep the salt off of the lights themselves as this would effectively act the same way as glass blocking some of the light

I had no cover till one of my fish jumped out. :(
Now I have eggcrate covering it. Hey I figure if they use it on lighting, why not. It does block a little light on the edges of the tank, but not to bad. And all the fishes are safe.

i don't have a top on my tank at all. i just have my lights sitting right on the tank. yes you will have more water evaporation but it's actually more beneficial not to have the top on. i top off my tank almost every morning.

What do you do when you are away? I don't have the top on mine, and I'm losing about 1/2 gallon a day. Will I need a house sitter on vacation?
Every summer I'm gone for 2 weeks.

I had a five gallon reservoir of freshwater that was attached to a float valve in my sump on my 30 gallon open top. This would last me about 2 weeks.
The plastic mechanical float valve was pretty old school, but I never had any problems with it. I cleaned it periodically. There are better ones out there (infra-red, etc..) if you can afford them.
Open tops are awesome. :D
