What Do You Guys Pay For...

Hi,
I actually asked the guy at the LFS today if his price on Cured LR was average or what?? He of course said it was very low and good price..
He has a ROOM filled with tanks of Cured love rock, all seperated into different tanks... TONS to choose from, All shapes ans sizes....A huge room outback where he cures tons too.
He charged me 7.99lb for Cured Carribean LR
6.99lb for cured figi rock and has other stuff too but I am not
suffisticated enough to know what the hel* I am talking about anymore than this,... LOLOL
What are yur thoughts? Also, In your average LFS like Pe*co and Petsm**t I dont see ANY LR for sale.. Hmm ?????
Thanking you kindly, Kim

Kim-
For what I put in my 55 I paid $5.99 a pound for here in Michigan. I decided that was to much so I orderd baserock which cost me 25 dollars for 50 lbs + 32 or so dollars for shipping from California and this is what I will be curing and cycling with in my 90. I will seed it with what is in the 55 which is about 50 lbs also.
This baserock is some of the best stuff I have seen even dry, great little caves and holes, it is calcium carbonate based which is what you want, and it came from the harbors at Hawaii. So what am I going to pay for live rock? I'm not going to do it again if I can help it. From now on I will cure my own for just over a dollar a pound.

Thanks a bunch!!
I am really happy with my LR, it has tons of character and corriline (sp)? And I got to hand pick the pieces too...
Does ANYONE have a pic of a mantis.... Now I am paranoid! I know its not it BUT........ :(
It is so small! I think being in the store curing for over a month, It would be bigger? right? BUT in my paranoia, I am sitting in the dark in my livingroom and just listening... LOL I keep hearing (or think i hear) crackling sounds, quick ones... lol
I really doubt it! I can buy a trap too, right?
BTW, If this

[hr]
breaks my tank , is that covered under my home owners?> LOLOLOLOL Cuz I have $pent a fortune in the last week! :p also, what it will do to my living room! OUCH!
Thanking you kindly, kim

Yeah I pay six bucks too. Occasionally there are sales where it goes down to five. That's a nice bonus when filling my big tank. When I run out of places to put corals, I forsee myself buying more rock. The LFS's around here never have it, and I havent seen it here.... where's a good place to find nice, long pieces of shelf rock?

Kim-
I would hate to see the shrimp that can break the glass on a 75gallon tank! I just picked one up myself and they are thick! Your insurance should cover damage to the house but not to the tank/equipment. At least thats what my agent said when i bought mine.

I take offense to Superelvisa reply "They probably don't know what live rock is". I work at Petsmart. I don't consider myself an expert but I do know more than some of the people that have Idependent pet stores. Petsmart may not have saltwater fish or alot of salt water supplies, but trust me there are some of us out there that know what we are talking about!!

SaltyEEl, I wouldn't take offense. Of course there are a few people that are hobbyists that work there who know about the hobby, but the last time I walked in to one of those places, my jaw just about hit the floor at the conditions they kept their saltwater fish in. I mean, I don't expect to see a pristine reef display or anything, but this was disturbing. I have heard a lot of other similar stories as well. Does that mean that there is no one who knows anything? No...of course not.
A lot of retail employees know about the products they carry...if they don't carry it, they may not be aware of it...that is just the nature of the job. I have never seen LR at either of those stores.
I'm sure Elvis' comment wasn't aimed at you directly anyway...:D

I live out her eon the West Coast, and I pay 5 dollars a pound for cured Live Fiji Rock, but most stores sell it for $5.99 per pound. In less than 2 months I've already seen traces of Purple Corraline Algae. I have a LFS that sells a Box of 50 LBS Cured LR for $200 ( that is 4 bucks a pound ) but you cannot pick your pieces.
The best story is from my buddy who actually went to Pet*o and picked up about 7 lbs of live rock listed for 5 bucks a pound. When he brought it to the front cashier, she didnt know how to read the price tag and charged him 5 bucks for the whole thing!

Oh yeah....the reason I even replied in the first place...heh heh...
I have found a few places locally that sell LR for $2.99-$3.99/lb.
I paid $3.99 and picked it all out myself - Fiji.

jamesburg, it's not frag baby frag but Shag baby shag. British terms for shag means f*me baby. So...there we go, a little more info than most people needed or wanted. Just wanted to set you straight. Just well travelled and know all the kicks and terms. It is a real hoot to watch this and not many people know what shag really means. Now the mantis shrimp, does anyone have one for a pet?
