Oh, I forgot to mention that if your sandbed is too deep (>3" or so) the bottom level of sand can become anaerobic or anoxic, meaning an area with a lack of oxygen. This is fine for denitrification in the display tank, but when you remove that sand, you could release Hydrogen Sulfide gas, or other byproducts of a low/no oxygen environment.

its about 3 inchs deep right now, it will only be that way for a month in a half, before it was 1.5 inchs....i bought sand in a bag, placed it in my tank with my fish, in hopes my live sand would spread within about 30 days,...then im going to take the sand and place it in my new 125 gallon tank, and use the water from the 55 gallon, and buy pre-cycled water for my pet store, and have my fish up and going in the main tank...then im going to re cycle my 55 and use it for, simle things like clowns and what not.
