Just as the title says, what do you have in your sump? Bio filtration, mech filtration & why. Im getting a new sump with my new tank. Have tried cheato for trates but it died??? I want to know what people are using. My trates hover around 20 & I need ideas on how to bring it down (long term) I know water changes work but thats a quick fix.

IMO, i believe its more about lighting and nutrients than it is flow. Reason is, i had some in low flow in my 24aquapod....and it grew so well that i had to take some out. i put what i took out in a 10gal i've got, with lower flow than my other tank....and it seems to be fine. this may be just my imagination, so correct me if i'm wrong.

your correct but alot of people just have down foce flow where as the flow that allows the chato to tumble is key. I give all my chato to my lfs and he has it in his LR tank with high flow but it dose not allow it to tumble so it dies. My fuge has less flow but the corect pattern so it does well

Interesting, chato talk. I had mine in my fuge with very low flow. It turned kinda whiteish but some had mad it out to my return pump filter & is growing!!
I had just realized that I had corbon in my 404 that was over a month old
, I use my 404 to run carbon some time's & it also is the pump for my UV. I had just cleaned out my 404 & OMG what a mess. I replaced the carbon & will let it run for 2-3days then change it again, or remove it for a bit. Ive been so busy planing for the new tank I forgot about that. Does anyone use mud of any type in there fuge???

i have that miracle mud, and after my ... mistake... last night i'll be taking it out. I was reading to put a powerhead in the fuge to help with turnover to get rid of the cyano i have growing in there. Well... the suction cup didn't hold and i clouded up my tank with miracle mud dust.

I have my heater and temp probes in my sump. I dont run a skimmer anymore because I have a fuge. My return pump is also in my sump along with the pump to my spraybar. I keep the pumps in the water because it helps to heat th watr and the water also helps to quiet the pumps. In my fuge, I have a CBS, an emerald crab, hermits, snails, rubble rock, chaeto and caleurpa. I used to have sand as a substrate but switched it out for mitacle mudd. I am not a fan of the mudd because any little movement in the fuge, stirs up the mudd and then it gets pumped through the tank. I am upgrading in the next month or so to a bigger tank and sump/fuge and I will be getting rid of the mudd and going back to sand.
