I have a 2 bedroom apt. I have a 55gal tank with a heater, sump, skimmer, mag 5, Odysea 520 watt day/atinic lighting, 2 600 power heads. I leave a light on for my HOB refugium. 7pm-6pm
30gal tank with 305 watt MH/atinics bulbs, mag 5 drive, Bak pak skimmer, and 1 600 power head, and a heater.
30gal freshwater with a heater and 1 filter. I don't use the light on the tank much due to the sunlight.
10gal tank with the same as above set up.
Our electric bill just went up from $71 to $120. We do not pay for the electricity for the washer dryer and we have a gas stove. I am just curious it 2 tanks can put out that much electricity or if someone is tied into out power. I don't leave lights on all the time either

I have a smallish house (3 bedroom 2 bath). I have 4 fish tanks in total 3 saltwater.. at the time of my bigger bills I had 5 tanks. 2 55 gallon, 1 46 gallon, and 2 10 gallon. 3 people in the house using the bathroom etc etc.. washer/dryer gas stove and im in FL so of course the ac be blastin.. but a couple months ago I had to pay $230 for my electric bill. Now since its cooler and i've told everybody that the heat stays off and if you're cold wear blankets.. the latest bill was $120.
It sucks that my mom made me start paying the electric bill when I got into saltwater :p

Really...........lol I thought I was pissed when I saw my electrical bill. I am sorry you pay more. But it sucks how they can screw people on electricity.. I don't run the heat because we are on the second floor. I have never turned the heat on in the last 2 years we have been here.

I have a 2100 SF home and I pay $120 for electricity last month. My furnace is gas. During the summer, I pay around $220.
It is pretty easy to estimate the power usage/cost contributed by tank.
Lets say you have:
* 2 x 250W MH, on for 6 hr/d
* 2 x 110W VHO, on for 10 hr/d
* Skimmer using a 50 W Pump, on for 24 hr/day
* Bunch of wavemakers using 100 W, on for 24 hr/day
* 1 100W heater, on for 2 hr/day
Your daily power usage for the day will be:
9000 Watt Hour (2 * 250 * 6 + 2 * 110 * 10 + 50 * 24 + 100 * 24 + 100 * 2)
Your 30-day power usage will be:
270 kiloWatt Hour (9000 * 30 / 1000)
Now look at your bill. This is the total power usage by your tank. Compare that to the total power usage of your home.
The above stat is roughly my tank. At my current rate, I pay around $1/day for my tank.
If you really want to know the true power cost of owning a tank. You have to take into consideration the Air Conditioning working extra hard to pull all that heat during the summer month. Also, the humidifier working long hours to extract all that moisture evaporated from your tank. Maybe, it is best not knowing ......

Mine went from $85 to $105 when I fired up the 100 gal.
Now I'm considering shutting down the 75.
This was also at the same time we stopped running the a/c for the summer, so the difference was greater than $20 mo.

when you are all saying the square feet of the houses, do you count the land or just the house itself?

I just pay around 0$ a month for my fish tank's electrial bill. My friend who works for a solar power company sold me older models solar panels and the equipment needed to run half of my house, about everything but the major appliances.

We pay about $150 a month on the average payment plan, 2500sq ft house, a couple 40gallon QT tanks, a 55gallon turtle tank. Our furnace is gas, only reason it is as high as it is, is because I cannot stand being hot and I run the AC ice cold in the summer.

It's about 10 below here right now, my gas meter probably looks like a ceiling fan. Tank heater is having a little trouble keeping up too, tank is in front of 8 feet of windows.

Just doing "quick" averaging here looks like most people are paying $30-$35 a month more for their tank...
Which is consistant for me as well...was $85-$95 3-4 years ago,(before tanks), last bill about $180-$190....
Add 10-12% for inflation over the last couple years and that I have two tanks, two sum/pumps, two Closed loops, four lighting setups (tank and fuge) and I jumped $35 a tank...
