What do you think of RIO pumps?

leave it where you saw it!!! they are the biggest peice of crap in this hobbie!! not to mention, DANGEROUS!! go with a mag drive pump. they are about the same price and work ALOT better.

You get what you pay for. For larger pump needs I think Dolphin and Iwaki are probably the best. I have a Rio that the lfs supplied with my initial tank set-up and I wouldn't buy another one.

i just use my rio to mix saltwater, IT IS LOUD! <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />

O, I forgot to mention, I like them, all have been good, Except the 1700 will not start when plugged in, needs to be influenced, the 400 has no head presure, I have to run the UV sideways, the 2500's are working well, but the 4' head is not as advertised, ( due to the 90 deg pvc in my return) so I run 2 pumps now.

i have had a RIo running a skimmer this night it sparked and let off the nastiness smell. I would never get one again. never never never. go wth a mag drive for an insump or the Iwaki for out of sump

I have been running a 2500 for almost a year, and I have to take it apart to get it restarted every time I turn it off for tank maintenance. It gets loud sometimes too, but a good cleaning usually takes care of the noise for a month.
My opinion: you get what you pay for, and they are the cheapest you can get <img src="graemlins//uhuh.gif" border="0" alt="[U-Huh]" />
I am saving up for a mag or similar pump(I don't want to drill a hole in my acrylic sump).
Also, I was looking at the rio box, and the warranty is only 6 months. I wonder if they know something they're not telling us <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />
Anyway, just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention something. The 2500 that came with my tank shocked the #$*%@ out of me when I first set up my tank, but it was a used setup, so I figured it had been run dry or something. Should have read a little more, before I replaced it with another.

I have two on my current set up. A 27 and a 21, the only problem I have had is the 21 starting back sometimes after power outage. It runs my skimmer though. I just whack it with the handle of my algae scraper and it flips right on. Never had any problems other than that. I also have the 600 on my 40g with the cpr backpack....no complaints. Not even noise.
The 3100 is the same gph as the 2700, but is a high pressure pump, designed for tolerating some back pressure of ball and gate valves, and pumping vertical distances.

I had one that i bought new and it never worked. Well i guess it did for a week or so but then it died. I also have one that i have never run other than to pump water out of the tank it came with. I got a 75g and it had a lot of equipment with it. The skimmer came with a rio that actually works. So i would never buy another one, but i'll use the used one because the previous owner had it for 3 yrs without problems and it actually still works!

I've used several Rio's , 600, 800 and 2100. Each had a personality all their own, and each required something special to keep it running. Not my idea of a good pump feature.
The 2100 had a problem starting back up on the very first few powerdowns, but was fine after that.
The 600 and 800 would just out of the blue, start screetching something awful, and caused the puppy to wet the floor and hide under the bed a few times <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />
I don't like them. I think they are poorly constructed - and I've heard way too many horror stories. Replacing all soon.
