What does a mid 4 figure coral look like?

For the price of a Kia, this Chalice just sold on ebay to the tune of $3,550. It measures 3" x3". I bought a few other corals from him, but this one is a truly one of a kind piece. It will be a shame when the new owner feeds the crap out of it so a bunch of new eyes appear, so he can frag the hell out of it and charge $300-$400 per eye.

this reminds me of the convict chalice. when it was imported, they only paid 16$ for it.

I am not $3k impressed with this coral myself. Why wouldn't you want the new owner to culture and sell frags of it?

and why was it 3k anyway? Rare? So..... they ripped it out of the ocean, once again rare, to possibly frag so one can kill it by not knowing what there doing?

the pattern for chalice is rare. i can almost guarantee the person that bought this is one of the major e-tailers for the hobby. hyped people go crazy for this kind of coral and pattern. if it wasnt so expensive, i would love to have a frag of this or the convict chalice (500$/eye). but then again, i like having things that arent easily found in the hobby lol

There's something to be said for the "whole" colony. I just don't believe any of the frags from this colony, or any of the frag's frags, will ever be left to grow into a decent sized colony. I just think it would be so much cooler as one centerpiece coral in someone's dream display tank, next to a couple other awesome corals, true red plate coral, incrediscoly, etc. Rather then getting fragged out, and sitting in a frag rack along side 27 other 1/2" x 1/2" frags, in 14 different people's frag tanks.
The new owner obviously paid a ton for this coral, and is completely free to do with it whatever they like. I definitely can see how a lot more people could potentially afford a $300-$500 frag of their dream coral, rather then $4000 for the colony.

like the convict chalice, there are a couple of frags out there that have grown into a decent sized colony. (5"+) so i think there eventually will be more and more larger colonies of the colony above.
the one above looks to be no more than 6"
