I just think its funny, the whole thing. Obviously you shouldn't keep an animal/Fish etc. in an aquarium they will outgrow. But I'm sure it happens more often than I'd like to believe. The idea that the police would notice lot alone do anything about a Cali ray in a 2' long tank, even if the ray is 2' himself is laughable. We have a lot of terrible things happening in this country as we speak that their not doing anything about. There out there protecting us from people leaving bars and driving w/ out license plate lights. As well as rounding up other easy collars that line the govt.'s pockets meanwhile there are truly atrocious crimes on humanity and animals alike, billy bob has a alligator in his tub and there are still people cutting off shark fins and tossing them back in the sea. Those are the ones they will see and w/ luck stop. But joe snow in Ohio that has a Cali ray he naught w/ the intention of upgrading his tank and never got around to it is going to be fine. He should have the sense enough to take it into his local shop but if not, well I really don't think there's a secret police force that is hunting stupid and insensitive selfish people who have only theirselves in mind. That's the reason they got the thing in the first place, to impress friends/ a girl. Or to feel like a lib. Elitist who is cool enough to have a "creature" no one else does. It is our job to help find these people, educate them, guide them and even relieve them of their "burden". I don't mean to offend anyone and I really don't want to argue, I just want all sides to communicate w/ realism and not speak out of anger due to hurt feelings or pride. I'm far from perfect myself and have said things, like everyone, I regret. We are all on the same side here we need to work together. I have a 53.5 gal reef up now 3'x2.5'x12" high. And am setting up a 200gal 5' long acrylic as soon as I move. I'm going to transfer the live rock and some sand, + new rock/sugar live sand and fill it w/ my ro/di water. I'm not going to go shark because I feel this setup will be a little small. I am deciding on wether to go fo w/ ray(s) or octopus. Idk if I can keep a small octopus w/ Cali rays or not though from what I have read its possible but may be dangerous for the octopus do to the stinger. I would appreciate any advice on my 200gal setup. I'm sorry about the earlier part of the message, but I think I'm just getting old. The world is tough and people don't do what people think they do anymore. There is so much happening that so much is missed.

It's also funny because this thread is 8 years old...

I dunno how much research you've done, but California rays are temperate water fishes and don't do well at tropical temps, so whatever you keep with it should also be a temperate critter, and a chiller is a must. Depending on where you live, whether your tank is glass or acrylic, and how thick it is, you may have trouble with the tank "sweating", as you'll need a chiller to keep it cool. At one point, we had three temperate tanks running, so I have a little experience here.

The ray will likely eat the ceph, and FWIW, cephs generally only live a year or two, so lots of trouble for short longevity (which is why I've never kept one).
