What filtration for 40 gallon reef?

What type of filtration should I use for a 40 gallon reef system? I do not want a sump.

I have a 30g and my buddy has a 40 and we both have hang on the back filters that were ment for a 55g tank. We have fish and corals and our water is great. Its not the perfered way to do it, but its the cheapest and as long as you keep it clean it works.

If you do not want a sump. I would just have LR, LS, HOB skimmer, and Powerheads for flow. You could also add HOB phos. reactor and run phos. remover and carbon.
