What goes between tank and lights?

the glass top does filter out some of the lights penetrating capabilities but for most of us with intense lighting over a reef tank we remove the top for better air transfer and to help cool the water down ... a covered aquarium means trapped heat from the lights meaning a raise in tank water... i still run a chiller to keep the temp down but if i had a glass top the aquarium would melt lol.....
DE means double ended bulb and SE is single ended just a different style of bulb... DE's need a pendant with a piece of glass to stop the harnful UV rays from burning your corals SE bulbs have that protection built into the bulb....
i would not put any plexi glass in front of a MH bulb u would need glass plexi would melt

When you do your weekly maintenance on your tank pull the lights off and wipe them down to keep them from getting encrusted......Sounds like you might have some wild water splashing there as well

What size tank is it? 1"-2" your going to see the temp of the water go sky high that close

I use glass cover but I leave some open spaces but evaporation rate is only fast when its summer other than that winter time it doesn't evaporate that fast.

Metal halides must be 8-10" above the water!!! :scared:
If you accidently touch them,it will be a memory forever burned into your arm...literally.
If water splashes them they will burst, sending glass shards and phosphorous into your tank which can potentially harm it's inhabitants.
