the size pump will depend on the overflow size which will depend on the tank size

1) what size overflow are you considering getting (what is the GPH rating).
2) how far (vertical) is the water going to have to go to make it back to the tank. One thing to consider when buying a return pump is the head loss.... most companies will publish a chart or something detailing that.
