Guitars:
I don't have anything special just like a Dean electric acoustic,a beat up Ibanez my dad found, and my very first guitar a first act.But I'm getting a MIM Fender Stratocaster, it has an awesome chrome red body with a maple neck.
Basses: I have a a washburn we found at a yard sale dont know exactly the kind it is though just know the brand. My sisiter is also getting her first bass its an affinity squier bronco bass,it's a cool starter bass.
I would like to know what kind of guitars or basses you have, I know a few people play around here.If possible please post some pictures of them too.

I got a
1993 Gibson Les Paul Standard
1997 Fender Strat
2007 Gibson SG-3
then I got 2 peice of crap guitars. a Peavey Strat knockoff from the 80s and some kind of dimestore guitar from the 60s, like a Kay or something.
I'm thinking of getting either a Guild or Taylor acoustic this year, but I'm also saving up for a Marshall JTM45, so it'll depend on which one I want more once I get the money together. I've got a Fender Blues Deluxe amp currently.

I posted this in Wade's thread, but I think this thread is a better fit..........
I just bought an Ibanez S470. It has a humbucker at the bridge & neck positions and a single coil in the middle.
I bought a Dimarzio Mo Joe for the bridge & a PAF Joe for the neck (these are Joe Satriani's signature pickups). I put in a 3 way toggle and left the single coil disconnected (don't really like it).

Also, I don't think I could ever own a guitar that doesn't have a Floyd Rose style tremolo.
My Jackson has a Floyd Rose and it stays in tune for a long time unless I really crank on the tremolo a lot.
The Ibanez I just bought has a new ZR Tremolo. It stays in tune no matter what I do. It also has a backstop so if a string breaks, the other strings won't go out of tune like they would with the Floyd Rose.

Electrics:
'98 MIM Fender Powerhouse Strat
'05 American Series Fender Strat
'87 Fender Jazz Bass
Acoustics:
Fender 12 string that I string with only six strings.
I actually like playing the Mexican Strat better than the American. lol
You didn't ask about amps, but I also have an original '65 Fender Deluxe Reverb, a '67 Princeton Reverb, and an '07 Epiphone Valve Jr. halfstack(great little rig).

Real Strats don't have humbuckers!

imo, Strats are most useful for blues. and the only pickup useful for that is the neck pickup. the hb in the bridge makes it a more versatile guitar for rock. the middle pickup is pretty worthless and I feel a singlecoil in the bridge would be worthless as well. that's why Gibson is much better imo. I can get way better sounds from just 2 pickups than I could from any combination of 3 pickups in a Strat.
and mahogany pwns* alder, swamp ash, or basswood.
*my first official use of 'pwns'

In a couple years I really want to get a Gibson, maybe an sg or a les paul, I don't know. But they are so expensive.

Also for my birthday i'm getting an amp. I was thinking a line 6 spider three 15 watt amp, nothing big but I heard they are loud and have a bunch of cool effects built in. What do you guys think?

Gibsons are expensive, but they're worth it if you get a good one. imo, an SG is kind of like a Strat in that it is more a specialized guitar for a particular type of sound. but I have yet to find any genre of music that a Les Paul can't cover. Les knew what he was doing when he came up with that one. the most versatile guitar I've personally played, bar none.
if you're looking for one of those modeling type amps, I would recommend looking at Vox before Line 6. I'm pretty sure Vox makes modeling amps that are about equal to price as the Line 6 and imo, they are better. though nothing, imo, beats a good tupe amp.

soundwise, hell yeah, tube pwns solid state.
but s/s has less maintenance on it....
yeah, but tubes should last a minimum of 2-3 years, so it's really not that much maintenance. if I were strictly into heavy metal, I would just do ss because ss gets a great metal sound. but for warm, 'classic rock' type sounds, a tube amp is maximum pwnage (like that, don'tcha?)

fast you learn my friend.
i agree. s/s is better for that metal edge, since amp takes much more abuse.
for that warm bluesey sound, tube all the way.
also, your right that tubes need to be replaced every 2-3 years.
it also depends on several factors:
a) how much abuse they take (power wise)
b) they can break if your gear gets rattled in transit
c) environment: they have to warm up to a "normal" temp before you can crank em on. i wouldnt let them sit over nite in a car during a minnesota winter night.
so, if you are meticulous about your gear, tubes give an uncomparable sound. but they also carry more responsibility.
