what if the tank water gets too warm?

Okay warmer weather is coming and it is too early for air conditioning. Can the tank get too warm if the air isn't on and the house heats up? If so, what do you do? I have heard of people losing a tank because they went away and forgot to turn on the air on a hot day.

Yes, you can depending on how warm your house gets durning the day. If you house is only getting into the lower 80's you can probably get away with changing your light cycle so it isn't on during the heat of the day and running fans on your tank. If your house is getting into the 90's you are headed for trouble and should look into purchasing a chiller.

Ditto on the chiller, what type of lighting do you have currently?

i went away last year for three days, while gone the A/C broke in my house, all my soft corals turn to liquid and most my crabs and snail died, lost about half my fish due to stress. my water reached 98 degrees.
yeah. go with a chiller.

I was thinking that was what a chiller was for. Okay, it is my next purchase. I just have the regular lights that go with a standard tank. Nothing fancy yet? How much do the chillers cost? I have a 125g. The temp of my house right now is 72 and it was a warm day today so I think I am safe until I get to the store.

During the spring/summer period when it's not warm enough to run the A/C I freeze some plast water bottles and let them float in the tank to keep the temperature under control. It's not the perfect solution, but it beats pooring more money into an already expensive hobby. If I can't be there during the heat of the day, then I just go ahead and set the A/C to come on at a low enough temperature to keep the water temperature under control. Under these conditions the house probably needs the dehumidification anyway.

Yea...at this time of the year I start to sometimes envy you guys. My A/C is been on for like a month already. With temperatures being a constant issue around here I just keep the A/C at 75 and have a fan blowing on my tank's surface. That keeps my tank between 78-79 degrees all day/night. Lots of evaporation, but cheaper to top off everyday than to get a chiller.

yea, you can lose a tank rather quickly if your temp. goes up to high. i lost all my corals when i was moving a tank because i had to go away for a day to get my other stuff, and the tank got to hot. if your house gets only 72 right now, you should be ok. im here in atlanta and the house is in the 80/ low nintys. yes, inside. but only on those hot days. in tennessee, its only 75 apprx. in the house where my tank is. so, dont worry about it unless it gets way hot in your house.

If you have the means to purchase a chiller, then purchase one.
As others here have mentioned... the chiller backs up your home AC and your home AC backs of the chiller. When placed against the cost of your time and livestock, they are dirt cheap (well maybe not dirt cheap... but you know what I mean).
You mentioned cost... for a 125g, you'll need about a 1/4 to 1/3hp unit. Expect to pay about 600-800 for one. It is one of those things that's freaky expensive, but when the day comes that you need it, sitting back in that easy chair watching your tank chill out feels pretty damn good.

BTW... JBJ and Aqua Logic are the only brands I'd buy.

Especially this year... what's with this weather?
My chiller seemed to be running more than not yesterday.

i keep it set around 74 worst part here lately is that i got a killer deal on light for the new 120 and when its on i have to turn the ac to a higher setting (house warmer) becasue the light puts off so much heat and the thermostat is in the same room which makes it come on more...the rest of the house will freeze you but that room stays at what the set point is.

Try leaving your furnace fan on constantly. It helps keep the air mixed up and one room from getting warmer than the others.
